His account of his early childhood in a devout Anglo-Catholic family, his conversion to Roman Catholicism and his subsequent life which has seen him successively as Abbot of Downside and a Bishop concerrned in the highest councils of the Church, paintd a fascinating spiritual panorama of a long and distinguished life. In August, 1961, he was elected Abbot President of the English Benedictine Congregation, and in that capacity he found himself a member of the second Vatican Council, which opened on 11 October 1962.
