'The record of anti-Christian persecution in Sudan is one of the most atrocious in the world today. Religious minority rights are not protected, and Islam is the state religion, which confers second-class citizenship status on all non-muslims. More than 2 million have died; more than 4 million are displaced, and countless others have been enslaved. Many of Sudan's suffering Christians feel isolated and forgotten. What is so striking about Cardinal Zubeirs's words are his powerful rebuttal of hatred and revenge and despite everything that has happened to his people his tangible belief in the power of forgiveness. His moving testimony deserves to be widely read.' Lord Alton of Liverpool
