Description
Saint Alphonsus Liguori was born on September 27th, 1696 in Marianella, near Naples to a noble family. He was a gifted child and extremely well educated, gaining a doctorate in law aged 16. He soon became a leading lawyer in Naples but what he saw of the world disturbed him, and despite opposition from his father, he became a priest. He was noted for his simple, clear, direct way preaching, and his gentleness in the confessional. In 1732 he founded the Redemptorist Order and toiled to save souls in spite of untold difficulties and trails. It became his glory but also his cross. In 1762 he was consecrated Bishop of S’ant Agata until overwhelmed by age and infirmity, suffering from severe rheumatism, he retired to die, He was a popular author, and few saints have said or written so much. He said “Pray, pray, thy prayers are all powerful with Jesus, who delights to grant thee all thy requests”. Amen.
His Feast day is August 1st.
Saint Alphonsus Liguori, pray for us.
